2021: A Season in Review

We entered the 2021 season with a degree of uncertainty. Vaccines were offering hope that we could return to the water, but the pandemic was still problematic. So we entered the season with fingers crossed and hoping for the best. I’m happy to report we not only had a full season on the river but a successful one.

Competitively, we rowed in regattas in Indianapolis and Cleveland. We participated in several events at the Indy Sprints with a 1st place finish in the Men’s Master 4+. At the Head of the Cuyahoga our Women’s 8 participated in the 5000 meter event. For a number of our members it was their first race experience. We hope to increase competitive opportunities in 2022.

At the start of the season our wish list for capital improvements was a new dock to replace our ancient wood dock, a new roof on our boathouse, and an upgrade to our coach’s launch. Thanks to the City of South Bend our roof was replaced in September. In cooperation with the University of Notre Dame, the City of South Bend, and the South Bend Paddlers and Scullers, we christened a new dock in October. Finally, thanks to the generosity of some our members, we were able to purchase a coaching launch from Ohio State University. Our wish list for 2022 includes a men’s 4+ shell.

We did have some disappointments. Due to concerns about the pandemic we were unable to host any of our introductory programs which meant we were unable to expand our membership for a second season. With a waiting list of over one hundred names, we are hopeful to offer Rowing 101, Learn to Row, and Novice rowing in spring/summer 2022.

A big thanks to our coaching staff and those that supported our efforts during the 2021 season. See you in 2022.
